How much does a small business website cost?

The honest answer, without the useless range. What you actually pay for, why cheap is the most expensive option, and a simpler way to price it.

A custom small business website usually runs a one-time build fee in the low thousands, plus a monthly amount for hosting, care, and marketing. At the cheap end you can build it yourself for the price of a subscription. At the high end, an agency will quote fifteen to fifty thousand dollars and up. Most owners land in the middle, and the number depends far less on page count than on one thing: how much of the work you do, and how much is done for you.

Where the money actually goes

You are not paying for pages. You are paying for judgment, for a site that loads fast and holds up, for something you actually own, and for someone to keep it working after launch. A template gives you none of that. A good build gives you all of it. The design is where the thinking lives; the pixels are just where it lands.

Why the cheap website is the expensive one

A do-it-yourself site looks free. Then you spend three weekends wrestling a template, the result looks like every other business that bought it, and the customers you lose to a slow, generic site cost you more than you ever saved. Cheap is a price you pay later, in a currency that is hard to see: your time, and the trust of people who clicked away.

Why agencies cost so much

A traditional agency charges for its process as much as for the work. Discovery calls, revision rounds, account managers, and a developer queue you wait in. The work is often excellent. But a lot of the invoice is the overhead of how they operate, not the site itself, and the timeline stretches to match.

A simpler way to price it

Split it in two. One time to build the site, then a monthly plan to host it, care for it, and market it. That is how Launchpad prices it: a custom build starting at fifteen hundred dollars, then a plan from ninety-nine dollars a month. You get agency-quality work without the agency-sized invoice, because the system underneath does the heavy lifting.

The right question is not which website is cheapest. It is what this site will cost you over the next two years, in money and in time. Answer that honestly, and the math usually favors paying a fair price once and never thinking about it again.
